For this project, my task is to review my results from the social media quiz and research how social media impacts everyone, including myself.
After taking the quiz, I realized that I probably do use social media more than ever necessary. My results are not at all what I wanted, although I would be lying if I said I was surprised. I think even saying there's worse people when it comes to usage is not at all reassuring. I feel like I should make more of an effort to limit my social media use. I am going to start doing this by replacing the time I spend on social media with an activity such as reading, crafting, or spending more quality time with others. I do believe I can limit my usage more; I think we all can.
While going through the article and the data. This chart specifically caught my attention. This chart provides so much information to pluck from. What I found interesting is the Hispanic row and how much lower the usage of LinkedIn is compared to other races. I have seen people pointing out online that the newer generation of Latinos are not putting in as much effort in school because of the poor role models they have through social media. I have seen this firsthand with my younger siblings, although it is nice to see someone that looks like you on social media, it does not always mean it is positive. This is specific to apps like Instagram and TikTok, where these Latin content creators are going on podcasts or making videos talking about dropping out of school. This is a horrible portrayal of Latinos to younger generations. Social media is a huge reason Hispanic people are not more concerned with their education considering the types of uneducated individuals that flood their social feeds. This ties in with how fewer Latinos are using LinkedIn- an app designed for finding jobs and networking, something new generations are not getting a chance to learn about.
In my opinion, social media has a big impact on society. I think it might be a person-to-person concept, some people might not let themselves be swayed or changed by social media, but I feel this only applies to older generations. I like to think social media has some positive impact, people get news a lot quicker, people can more easily interact/keep in touch with others, and people can make money and jumpstart their careers through social media. Despite that, I feel social media has more negative implications. For the average person, social media can negatively impact their body image and life choices. This causes a collection of people who want what they don't have thus creating a more competitive work field. Social media can strike envy and hatred into anyone too engulfed in it. But I believe there is a median we can all find, limiting our usage of social media can be the most efficient way to that median.
In this module, I learned more about my social media usage. I use social media more than I should and it often gets in the way of my day-to-day activities. I also learned how much social media is impacting races and ethnicities as a whole. I know now that it is important to stay a few steps ahead of social media and not allow it to consume you.
