Hello my name is Chaim Maisel and I am currently attending UMBC and CCBC to pursue multiple degrees relating to financial economics. Although my major is outside of computer science, information technology, and engineering, I have always had love for these disciplines and understand their importance in the modern world. I hope to one day be working in finance and economics at a technology company or doing something related to technology along the way. I also am fascinated with the cryptocurrency phenomena that is bringing together many aspects of technology, economics, and finance together in an attempt to revolutionize the modern monetary system. This is another area of interest that I hope to explore more along my career path.
As a kid my parents encouraged me to become technologically literate and learn programming. Although I was not super interested in the programming aspect, I loved working with hardware in situations like computer building and server setup. My dad, who worked in an early cloud business at the time, taught me a lot about networking. All of these skills that I learned early on have always stuck with me and proved to be very useful in all of my endeavors.
My main hobby now is building and flying drones. This hobby requires a lot of knowledge and problem solving skills relating to hardware, firmware, software, engineering, and radiofrequency communication. Although I have run into many challenges and the mistakes can be very expensive in this hobby, it is worth it to me because the type of drones I build allow for first person view of the drone's perspective through goggles that receive video transition. This means that after really good muscle memory of the controls is achieved through practice, the entire flight experience can end up feeling completely intuitive and immersive; like you are actually flying. For me, this has unlocked a very artistic and improvisational aspect of the hobby.
I came into this class with a pretty good grip on computer and server basics, cybersecurity, and some emerging technologies. However, this class was able to show me many of the lapses in my understanding and help me revisit topics that I have not researched in a very long time. Many of the fields we looked in to, such as cybersecurity and blockchain, develop so quickly that much of the information I researched for the class was new to me.
Creating an E-portfolio for a class was also not new to me, but some of the organizational methods that we learned throughout this class helped add more structure to this site than in my previous e-portfolios. I struggled with sourcing digital media in this class but after some clarification, I think I am doing it more ethically and responsibly than I have before. This course also got me to switch from Google Docs to Microsoft Word. I had not used MS Word since middle school but I know its the industry standard so it was good to have a lesson on that.
