Applications:
This video can be used for a variety of purposes, especially in secondary science education.
This video is a great example of a combustion reaction in chemistry. Activation energy and exothermic reactions could a topic of focus.
If teaching physics, this video could be used to demonstrate the difference in light colors and corresponding wavelengths.
If teaching biology this image could be used as a attention grabber to talk about secondary succession after a forest fire.
Engineering students could test and record other types of matches being lit, and discuss the various components that constitute a quality match.
Tips for shooting slow-motion video of an illuminated object in the dark:
1) First set up the shot in regular lighting by holding your object (match) at your desired distance from the phone.
2) Select Slo-Mo mode.
3) Press and hold one finger on the screen to lock your focus on the object.
4) Turn off the lights, press record, and begin to illuminate your object.
5) Stop recording and edit video according to your desired results. (I trimmed video length and crop the edges of the video so that the match took up more visual space in the shot.
*Shot using iPhone 12 Pro.
** Failure to lock the focus prior to recording will result in a blurry image because the camera will tend to auto-focus on the background as the light is changing.
*** This could be used to film other illuminated objects such as flashlights turning on or even bioluminescent organisms.
