CSAwesome PD Options

CSAwesome PD is offered in three lengths and can be completed either online or hybrid (a mix of face-to-face and online). Support from a PD Facilitator that is experienced with teaching CSAwesome is provided during the PD and throughout the academic year.

  • For those experienced with Java and AP CSA - Short 6 hour PD workshop

  • For those new to AP CSA, but experienced with Java - Immersion 45 hour PD

  • For those new to Java and AP CSA - Extended 65 hour PD (includes 20 hours of Java specific PD) if planning to teach AP CSA

  • For those new to Java and AP CSA - Intro 20-25 hour PD (includes Non-AP Java basics and pedagogy) for those not planning to teach the AP CSA course or planning to teach a pre-AP Java course

College Board Workshops and Summer Institutes:

The College Board offers AP CSA specific training (either one day or 30 hours) for teachers preparing to teach the AP CSA course. Teachers may decide to attend a College Board Workshop or Summer Institute training and/or attend a CSAwesome PD. Attending both is encouraged, but not required. Cost

  • Intro to Java (25 hours): $1000/teacher (includes academic year support)

  • Immersion PD (45 hours): $1750/teacher (includes academic year support)

  • Extended PD (65 hours): $2400/teacher (includes academic year support)

  • Virtual Mini-PD (2-4 hours): $25-$50/teacher (academic year support not included)

  • Short PD (6 hours): $250/teacher (includes academic year support)

In some cases, grant funding may be available to help cover the cost of teacher participation in the CSAwesome PD. See our Funding page for more information on how you can attend a PD for FREE. If applying for funding, please wait to receive a decision from the team before registering.

Credentials Offered

CSAwesome acknowledges the achievement of every teacher who completes the PD program by awarding the following:

  • A Certificate of Participation is given to all teachers who complete the professional development, indicating the number of PD hours.

  • Graduate Education Credits can also be earned through the College of St. Scholastica by earning a Certificate of Participation and completing additional coursework. (Cost: $150/credit. Available in an Immersion (1 credit) or Extended (2-3 credit) basis, based on Carnegie Units of 120 hours for 3 credits.) For more information, see our Graduate Credit page.

FREE NCCSE WEBINAR: Breaking Down FRQs

Tuesday, March 29, 2022 6:30-8:00 PM ET via Zoom.


The NCCSE team and two experienced CSAwesome teachers for a walkthrough of the AP CSA Exam and how to approach the Free Response Questions (FRQs) with your students. We’ll share tips for how to break down a sample FRQ including how to apply the close reading approach and how FRQs are graded.

This opportunity is open to California educators planning to teach AP Computer Science A with CSAwesome in the 2022-23 academic year.

Time Commitment:

  • ~10 hours per week, slow pace

  • Synchronous meetings every Tues and Thurs 4:00 - 5:30 PM PT, office hours every Friday 3:30-5:00 PM PT

  • Academic year workshops to be held monthly August through May on a Tuesday 4:00 - 5:30 PM PT

06/20/2022 - 07/31/2022 | New to Java *Research Project*

What:

  • FREE 6 week extended PD (65 hours) for teachers who are new to CSA and new to teaching AP CSA. ~10 hours per week.

When:

  • June 20, 2022 - July 31, 2022 | Synchronous meetings every Tues, Thurs, and Fri 11:00 AM-12:30 PM ET.

Where:

  • virtual via Zoom

Registration:

  • In order to register for our research project and PD, interested teachers must first apply here. Accepted teachers will be notified and provided registration instructions via email.

07/13/2022 | Workshop at the CSTA 2022 Annual Conference

Join us the CSTA Annual Conference on Wednesday, July 13 from 1-4 PM

3 hour hands-on workshop for teachers interested in using CSAwesome and/or connecting with other CSAwesome educators

$75 for CSTA+ members, $100 for non-members

07/25/2022 - 07/29/2022 | Pathfinders PD

Dates:

  • Experienced with Java teachers participate in an Immersion PD (45 hours): July 25, 2022 - July 29, 2022

  • New to Java teachers can also choose to participate in this PD by doing an Extended PD (65 hours) which includes two additional weeks of pre-work: July 11, 2022 - July 29, 2022

Time Commitment:

  • ~8 hours per day (11:00 AM - 6:00 PM ET daily), intensive and fast-paced

  • Synchronous meeting times: 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM ET, 2:30-4:00 PM ET, and 5:00-6:00 PM ET daily.

Interactive and hands-on training via Zoom for instructors looking to get familiar with using the Runestone Academy Instructor Dashboard.

Fall 2022: College of St. Scholastica EDU 6730: Programming and Teaching Java

An Online Graduate Course part of the Certificate in Computer Science Education program at the College of St. Scholastica. Participating teachers can sign up as a non-degree seeking student. Note: CSP as a first requirement is waived if you have taught CS A before.
