Computer reliability does not play a major role in Black Mirror: The National Anthem. Though various computing technologies such as smartphones, news channels, and social media feature heavily in this episode, the plot focuses not on the failings or unreliability of these devices, but on their effects on society. Much of the harm from this episode was caused by these technologies working too well. YouTube and news channels spread the ransom video to millions of viewers within just a few hours. Social media created an environment where disdain for the prime minister could build. Video cameras and proxy devices allowed the encrypted upload of the ransom video in the first place. Without all these technologies doing their job flawlessly, the events of this episode would be significantly less threatening to the prime minister’s public image.
