[TELEPHONE RINGING; PICK UP PHONE].
Hello! I hear you’re our newest employee! I just wanted to say hi and invite you to my office so we can get acquainted. I’m just at the end of the hall on the right, okay? (PAUSE) Okay. See you in a minute!
[HANG UP PHONE; FOOTSTEPS; KNOCK ON DOOR; DOOR OPENS].
Oh hi, lovely to meet you. Do you want to take a tour around the office? [PAUSE]. Okay, come along! So how are you doing? [PAUSE]. That’s great to hear. So have you completed your training module yet? [PAUSE].
Oh, good. What did you learn? [PAUSE]. Oh… the anti-discrimination stuff, eh? You know, I’ve worked in the government a long time and that hasn’t always been the case. They tend to leave out the ugly parts of our history in those training modules. [PAUSE].
What ugly parts? Well, our government wasn’t always accepting of lesbian and gay public servants like they are now. When the Cold War was happening, the government became suspicious of LGBT people in the federal public service and our armed forces. [PAUSE].
Why? Well, they believed queer people were a threat to national security because their sexuality could be used against them. But ultimately it was the government that ended up hurting these people. [PAUSE]. Good question, why don’t we ask some of our coworkers what happened to them during this time?
