What if AI were designed not simply to provide answers,
but to intentionally strengthen the thinking processes students need to develop?
The research across this OER points to a single conclusion: critical thinking develops under specific conditions, and the current generation of AI tools does not create them. Vantage is our proposal for what an AI environment would look like if it were designed backward from that research.
This is the one design goal no commercial AI tool shares: Vantage is built to become unnecessary.
Every existing tool optimizes for one thing: getting the learner to a better output. Vantage is built on two axes.
Axis 1 — The Conditions. How thinking develops. The seven conditions identified in our research: background knowledge, modeling expert thinking, purposeful questioning, discussion, feedback, metacognition, and scaffolding toward independence. (Abrami et al., 2015)
Axis 2 — The Dispositions. Who the thinker becomes. Philosophers Paul and Elder's eight intellectual traits, drawn from their expanded definition of critical thinking: humility, courage, empathy, autonomy, integrity, perseverance, confidence in reason, and fair-mindedness. (Hughes, 2024)
Vantage's architecture is built directly from the seven research-identified conditions that help critical thinking develop. Tap each condition below to see the feature that puts it into practice.

Dispositions cannot be taught by instruction. They are built by repeated practice under conditions that require them. Each of Paul and Elder's eight traits therefore gets a mechanism that creates the occasion for it.
