Last November, we offered a collaborative learning adventure and eighteen faculty from the University of Glasgow and the University of Washington | Bothell participated. As a result, we developed some friendships, we discovered new ideas, and we created visible demonstrations of our shared experiences. You can see those here on this site.
We have two sets of meetings. One in the morning for US people and one in the morning for Glasgow and Johannesburg.
November 18th at 8:30 am PST | 4:30 pm Glasgow time | 6:30 pm in Johannesburg. ( Zoom Link )
November 18th at 8:00 am GMT | 10:00 am in Johannesburg | 07:00 pm in Melbourne (Zoom Link)
November 25th at 8:30 am PST | 4:30 pm Glasgow time | 6:30 pm in Johannesburg. ( Zoom Link )
November 25th at 8:00 am GMT | 10:00 am in Johannesburg | 07:00 pm in Melbourne (Zoom Link)
What might you do for the month of November? Well, you will meet with your partner(s) and talk about the world and the craft of teaching. Maybe you'll share some local news or personal successes. Maybe you will talk about your pets or write about the nuances of good teaching? Likely, you will share ideas about the topics you have decided to wonder about and how you will represent those to others. Need examples?
Marie and Todd wrote almost daily on a Google Doc for three weeks about "the first five-minutes of class." During the fourth week they condensed the writing into a submission to Faculty Focus. It was published there a couple months later.
Sunita and Alison shared "small snippets of sound to represent our day."
Zubeida and Sarita created a vlog about bridging culture and identity.
Nathalie and two Chemistry colleagues from Glasgow visited Sunita's class as a panel and discussed self-care and mindfulness.
It could be an hour a week meeting with a colleague and a half an hour writing about a specific topic. It could be just spending an hour a week writing on a collaborative document or Padlet. It could be more, or even less. It is up to you!
Well, we just happen to have some reflections on the event from the participants!
You can add your name and interests to this document. On it, you can find and connect with others as well. It is helpful to be proactive and find a partner early. Maybe before November 1st! Just add your name, email address, and some things you are interested in doing or thingking about! That is the first step! Then find someone you want to connect with and email them. Easy.
If you want to chat via Zoom with some of the participants to get more information or find a partner, below are our planned MeetUps.
If you have questions or are unsure of how to proceed, please email Todd or Nathalie. Todd is at tconaway@uw.edu and Nathalie is at nathalie.tasler@glasgow.ac.uk
We also have scheduled open meetings in for all participants who want to connect on November 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th. ( Zoom Link )
The University of Glasgow is a public research university in Glasgow, Scotland. Founded by papal bull in 1451, it is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's four ancient universities.
The University of Washington Bothell was founded in 1989 and is one of the three campuses of the University of Washington.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) was established in 2005 following a merger between the Rand Afrikaans University, the Technikon Witwatersrand, and the Vista University Soweto Campus. This bold restructuring laid the foundation for a new kind of South African university—one that embodies transformation, accessibility, and academic excellence.
For eight years this learning community has met monthly to discover and discuss topics around teaching on the open web. You can visit our work here on the web.
