These weekly reflective poetry sessions offer a unique and imaginative way to explore your engagement with teaching and your students. Through the medium of poetry, you are invited to reflect on your pedagogical practices, uncover new perspectives, and express your experiences in a creative and meaningful form.
Whether you are an experienced user of reflective poetry or entirely new to the concept, this activity is designed to be inclusive and enriching.
The activity focuses on two key areas:
The creative process – exploring how you craft your reflections through poetic expression.
The final poem – the outcome of your reflective journey, which can offer insights and inspiration to others.
To support your writing, you will receive thoughtfully designed prompts that encourage deep reflection, contextual understanding, and creative exploration. These prompts aim to help you produce a piece that not only resonates personally but also contributes to shared learning within the academic community.
The emphasis is on freedom of expression and personal growth, rather than technical perfection. This is a space to experiment, to articulate your thoughts and emotions, and to engage with your teaching practice in a fresh and transformative way.
At the start of each week, you’ll be provided with a set of writing prompts or themes to inspire your reflections. Your response, whether brief or detailed, is entirely up to you. This is a personal, individual activity, but we’ll be sharing our creative processes and poems with a wider poetic community to foster connection and inspiration.
Everyone’s creative journey is different, so you’re encouraged to write at your own pace. However, we recommend completing your reflection within one week to stay in rhythm with the group.
We’ll be using Discord as our platform for sharing reflections, exchanging ideas, and building a supportive space for creative exploration.
At the end of the first week, participants’ reflections will inform the development of themes for Weeks 2, 3, and 4, allowing the activity to evolve in response to your insights and experiences.
In the final week, you will create a reflective poem that captures your journey through the process. Alongside this, we will produce a written output exploring how reflective poetry can be used to inform and enhance teaching practice in higher education.
We also welcome the development of additional outputs based on participant interest, your contributions may help shape future resources and creative pedagogical tools.
Please note: Reflective processes and poetry will be shared publicly on the Creative Pedagogies website showcasing the collective creativity and engagement of our academic community in November.
