The objective of this course is to provide residents with the necessary competencies for the determination of brain death. Through this course, residents receive training on the protocols to diagnose brain death which include physical examination, apnea test, and ancillary tests. Residents also practice communication techniques with a standardized patient to sensitively discuss the diagnosis with the patient's family.

This course is an immersive and comprehensive program to provide fellows with advanced point-of-care ultrasound skills (POCUS) specific to the neurocritical care setting. This course offers a high-intensity overview of ultrasound skills through the use of two CAE Vimedix Ultrasound Simulators and Sonosite Ultrasound Machines. The workshop is designed to refine and evaluate fellows’ skills as they perform scans on standardized patients, identify normal and pathology indicators via simulators, and are assessed on their knowledge and ultrasound skills set.

This workshop is designed for fourth-year medical students on the Critical Care elective. The workshop covers the physiologic principles and cardiopulmonary interactions underlying the risks, benefits, and applications of mechanical ventilator support for respiratory failure. The students are exposed to different modes of ventilator support for critically ill patients.

The transport of a critically ill pediatric patient supported by extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) between departments is a high-risk, low-frequency event. Such transport requires the coordination between physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and perfusionists. ECMO Transport simulation is a tool for developing the necessary framework, team building, and learning required for a successful ECMO transport program. It provides the opportunity for the team to work together, anticipate potential pitfalls, and rehearse efficient and coordinated response to in-transport emergencies.
