Zakiya Griot’ Gill, is an internationally recognized, multi-award-winning poet, writer and an educator from Guayaguayare Village, Trinidad, and Tobago, that has innovatively used the art of the spoken word, not only as a tool of entertainment but also to educate and inspire change. Ms. Gill has served as the youth Governor of Culture with the NGO, Youth Government of Trinidad and Tobago, where during her tenure when lobbied for the implementation of the 'Orange Economy". One of her main aspirations is to utilize the arts as an ideal tool to educate children and youth on gender-based violence which was evident in her pilot program Project Elevation Spoken Word Workshop and Mentorship Programme, and Spoken Word Competition where she served in the capacity of Project Coordinator and tutor. Recently, Ms. Gill won a national youth award from the Ministry of Youth Development and National Services for her contribution to Arts and Culture in Trinidad and Tobago. From 2020- 2022, she has been a finalist at the First Citizen’s National Poetry Slam and 2022 embarked on her first spoken word production entitled: "Unspoken” and was the featured poet at this year’s St Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival Ms. Gill stays dedicated to community work and capacity building and as in the past served as the Policy and Advocacy Officer " for the Nariva Mayaro District Youth Council (2023). Ms. Gill is the Chairperson for the Guayaguayare Secondary School Board which was appointed by the Ministry of Education. l. This year, under Project Elevation, Ms. Gill distributed 50 hygienic care packages and 100 sanitary napkins to tackle period poverty in her country. Ms. Gill stays committed to her first love, a spoken word that has seen her collaborate with Hitman, Mical Teja, Chinese Laundry, and The Black Box Crew, and has had the esteemed pleasure of being the featured poet and Patrice Roberts ' Strengthen of a Woman', concert series.
