Gobardhan Senrita was born on May 30, 1968, in Nickerie District, Suriname, representing the fourth generation of Indian contractors. With a remarkable 28-year career in education, Senrita has worked as a dedicated teacher.
In August 2020, Ms. Gobardhan assumed the esteemed role of District Commissioner in Nickerie. In this capacity, she serves as the highest representative of the government, directly representing His Excellency Mr. Chandrikapersad Santhoki, the President of the Republic of Suriname.
As District Commissioner, Ms. Gobardhan primary responsibilities centre around ensuring peace, order, and safety for approximately 35,000 residents. Furthermore, she is committed to fostering social, cultural, economic, religious, and political stability within the district.
Driven by the concerning prevalence of suicide cases in the district, Ms. Senrita Gobardhan has taken the lead in establishing a suicide prevention platform. This initiative involves collaboration with local and international stakeholders, including UNICEF, the Canadian Embassy, and the government, with a central goal of increasing awareness and providing support to those in need.
Recognizing the potential isolation experienced by many senior citizens within the community, Ms. Gobardhan has embarked on the development of a senior living complex. This project has been made possible through a combination of national and international funding. Currently, the final touches are being made to various amenities within the complex, including a communal kitchen.
Ms. Gobardhan’s deep concern extends to the degradation of the bio-eco system in the critically important Bigi Pan Muma protected area. The restoration of this area holds great significance in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on a global scale.
In addition to their responsibilities as District Commissioner, Ms. Gobardhan is deeply committed to enhancing the habitat's capacity, with a special focus on managing the shorebirds. Furthermore, she is an accomplished poetess and singer, having recently participated in the "International Women Poetry Platform" online event, featuring voices from India, the USA, and Mauritius.
Within their jurisdiction, Ms. Gobardhan is dedicated to facilitating efforts aimed at enhancing strategies to achieve food security and biodiversity protection, including the promotion of healthy flora and fauna growth. These strategies also prioritize the empowerment of women and youth, achieved through collaborative efforts with private and government stakeholders, aimed at fostering a healthier lifestyle within the district.
