Learning Environment
A key aspect of effective teaching is creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment, as emphasized in PPST Domain 2. During my practice teaching internship at Nursery High School, I encountered various situations that tested and strengthened my ability to foster a positive classroom atmosphere. From managing student behavior to facilitating collaborative activities, these experiences highlighted the importance of establishing a supportive space where all students can thrive.
One of the most significant challenges I faced was managing the behavior of my Grade 12 students, many of whom were strong-willed and easily distracted. During gardening activities and classroom discussions, I noticed how noise and disengagement disrupted the learning process. To address this, I implemented positive reinforcement techniques, such as praising students who demonstrated focus and responsibility. Over time, this approach helped improve their participation and cooperation. This experience taught me that a structured yet empathetic classroom management strategy is essential for maintaining a conducive learning environment.
Another critical moment was my role in facilitating the flag ceremony and earthquake drills. Leading these activities required me to model discipline and teamwork, reinforcing the values of respect and preparedness among students. Initially, I struggled with stage fright and hesitant participation from some students. However, by incorporating energizers and clear instructions, I was able to engage the students more effectively. These activities underscored the importance of a well-organized and interactive environment in fostering student involvement and school spirit.
Additionally, my experience with co-interns during group projects, such as creating tokens of appreciation for teachers, revealed both the challenges and rewards of collaboration. While some peers were uncooperative, I learned the value of patience and proactive communication in overcoming conflicts. This experience reinforced the idea that a positive learning environment extends beyond the classroom—it also involves nurturing respectful relationships among colleagues.
My internship journey deepened my understanding of PPST Domain 2 by exposing me to real-world scenarios where classroom climate and culture directly impacted learning outcomes. Through trial and error, I discovered strategies to engage students, manage behavior, and promote collaboration. These experiences have equipped me with the confidence and skills to create a learning environment that is not only orderly but also inclusive and motivating. As I continue my teaching career, I will prioritize building a classroom where every student feels valued and empowered to succeed.

Managing a classroom is far more complex than I initially imagined. The challenges I faced with student behavior and participation taught me that a teacher’s role extends beyond delivering lessons—it involves being a constant observer, mediator, and motivator. I realized that small gestures, like acknowledging good behavior or adjusting activities to suit students’ energy levels, can significantly impact the classroom dynamic. Moving forward, I aim to refine my strategies to better address diverse personalities and learning styles.
The importance of leading by example became evident during school-wide activities like the flag ceremony and drills. Students mirror the attitudes and energy of their teachers, so maintaining enthusiasm and clarity is crucial. These experiences also showed me that a sense of community and shared purpose can transform routine tasks into meaningful traditions. I hope to carry this insight into my future classrooms, where I plan to cultivate a culture of mutual respect and collective responsibility.
Lastly, working with peers during collaborative projects highlighted the value of patience and adaptability. Not everyone shares the same level of commitment, but finding common ground and focusing on shared goals can lead to successful outcomes. This internship taught me that a positive learning environment begins with the teacher’s mindset—being open to feedback, willing to adjust, and committed to fostering growth in both students and colleagues. These lessons will remain foundational as I strive to create classrooms where everyone feels seen, heard, and inspired to learn.
