ACADEMIES

Running on an eight-period day, students have the ability to explore their interests by choosing from a wide variety of electives, while still taking classes in the core curriculum. Today, Gables has a total of eight academies to choose from, offering some of the most advanced programs in the county.

Gables Academies

Academy of Finance (AOF) Magnet

The Academy of Finance at Coral Gables Senior High School is a magnet academy and member of the National Academy Foundation (NAF), a leader in the movement to prepare students for college and career success. NAF’s Academy of Finance connects high school students with the world of financial services, offering a curriculum that covers entrepreneurship, banking and credit, financial planning, international finance, securities, insurance, accounting, and economics, among other topics. The Academy of Finance curriculum and certification is validated by the Council for Economic Education. Academy of Finance students will have completed at least four NAF courses and a summer internship by the time of their graduation. In 9th grade, all students are required to take Intro to Information Technology (IT) . For their following years, they select between two different tracks: Entrepreneurship or Finance.

Business, Management, and Information Technology (BMIT)

At Business, Management, and Information Technology we give our students the tools and resources to develop their information technology while receiving industry certifications. Our courses promote creativity, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Technology and accounting procedures used in the workplace are essential components of tomorrow's workforce demands. With over 175 multinational companies located in the city of Coral Gables, the academy networks with firms to establish internships and work sites for students. Graduates emerge from the academy with integrity and evolve into individuals capable of success in a competitive, ever-changing global community.

Communication Arts, Film and Digital Media (CAF&DM)

CAF&DM empowers students to develop a creative voice and take creative risks in a hands-on, project-based learning environment. We promote creativity, problem-solving, and leadership skills in a real-world setting. Many of our students take on additional responsibilities in their roles as editors, managers, and mentors. We serve our school through print media (newspaper, yearbook, literary magazine), broadcast, film, and communications technology.

Design, Education and Hospitality (DEH)

The academy prepares students with requisite knowledge and the skills for successful careers either in hospitality, education or design. In culinary arts, students work under a certified chef to prepare for a career in the world's largest industry. As students build skills in food preparation and management, they develop competency in the elements of design. Education students in the Early Childhood Education program apply their knowledge and skills by infusing a high scope curriculum for preschoolers and managing the daily operations of a full service preschool facility. They graduate with both the experience and ability to go directly into the work world. Students enrolled in the design pathways will be exposed to both the fashion world and that of interior design.

Health, Public Service and Law (HSPL)

This academy will allow students to participate in a variety of experiences that will prepare them as future leaders in the health field, public service field and law. The major theme spiraling through this academy is the importance of personal involvement in the community and activism in civic affairs. Career opportunities offered by various local, state, and national governmental agencies, as well as the private sector in Miami-Dade County will be emphasized.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Magnet

In 1987 we were authorized as the first Miami Dade County Public School's IB World School. Through collaboration, we create a safe learning environment that nurtures success within an interactive and engaging setting, providing for all the individual needs of our diverse student population. We believe in developing students’ self-esteem and confidence through academic excellence with essential knowledge and skills to become high school graduates and integral members of both our community and the global environment, encouraging a cooperative and multicultural society for all.

Teaching Academy (TA)

The majority of individuals who enter the field of education do so because of a drive and desire to make a difference. This field nurtures, develops, and encourages people to seek knowledge while affording them the opportunity to continuously seek professional and personal growth every year. What the education field offers that most other careers do not are the amount of relationships and connections one develops with others. A teacher, principal, or any other faculty member in any given educational arena can influence, support, or build relationships with hundreds of learners—a relationship that fosters growth for all involved. This is why it takes a unique individual to survive and relish in a field that truly builds the future of our society.

Evolvement and adaptability are some of the biggest keys to success. The Teaching Academy will endeavor to provide you with fundamental knowledge of skills and competencies vital to a career that creates educational leaders.

The Cavalier Teaching Academy program offers a sequence of courses that provides coherent and rigorous content aligned with challenging academic standards and relevant technical knowledge and skills needed to prepare for further education and careers in the Education & Training fields.

Visual and Performing Arts (VPA)

We provide opportunities for students to express their craft from the Village of Merrick Park in Coral Gables, FL to the prestigious concert stage of Carnegie Hall in New York City. We become the outlet of artistic expression for Coral Gables High School through Chorus, Band, Orchestra, Guitar, Drama, Dance, Ceramics, Drawing and Painting. Our students compete at the local, state, and national level. Each year we are privileged to have students enrolled in college and university programs that expand their musical, dramatic, and creative talents enabling them to enter the world of stage performance, music technology, recording contracts and the like. When they leave Coral Gables High School they spread the motto that the Visual & Performing Arts Academy is the face of CGHS.
