A hot summer day in 1986, Byron Johns came up to me on the subway platform at Astor Place, the uptown side in New York City. I was there making a hustle playing one of my handcrafted instruments. He said, "You should know Joan Miller." "Who is Joan Miller?" I replied. Byron went on to say that she was the founder and head of the dance department at Lehman College up in the Bronx. She also had a dance company, JOAN MILLER'S Dance Players, of which he had been the company manager. “She's there now teaching in the gym. You should work for her.”

I got on the next #6 train, transferred to the #4 and in about 45 minutes walked into Lehman's gym. At center court on the first row of bleachers sat Joan Miller, a beautiful black lady wearing a long colorful skirt and an equally colorful scarf around her head. I introduced myself. She asked, "Can you plié, can you pirouette, can you fondu?" "No, I don't plié, I don't pirouette, I don't fondu. I play music?" "Do you want a job," she asked? Soon after our meeting I was working at the college accompanying dance classes, modern and ballet.

That's how I met Michael Wimberly. He was also playing for classes and we both worked in her dance company. The first time we played together was for me as if we had played together all our lives. That's a rare thing. But Michael Wimberly is a rare individual. He is just stuffed with talents and abilities. He can act, sing, rap, produce, compose, score films, and play piano, vibes, hand drums, drum set. He's a master teacher-educator for children and adults.
That's how I met Michael Wimberly. He was also playing for classes and we both worked in her dance company. The first time we played together was for me as if we had played together all our lives.
