Alan Michael is a native New Yorker and alumnus of the Berklee College Of Music in Boston. Upon leaving Boston, he moved back to NYC with a group of musicians he had been playing with in Boston, Cooper Moore and David Ware. They all moved in to a rather abandoned type building, named after it's address, 501 Canal St. There, they produced concerts in the building's storefront, as part of NYC's growing loft scene. During this time, Alan recorded with musicians such as Cecil McBee, Gunter Hampel, Jeanne Lee, as well as continueing to play with Cooper Moore. In the early 80's, Alan started playing with the Carla Bley band, with which he toured with over the course of three years, during which time he also did some touring with 80's pop synth the Psychedelic Furs and Our Daughter's Wedding. Alan has recorded three albums as a leader, Valley Of Search (India Navigation records), Lost In Asia (Passport Records) and As Daylight Fades (Control Group). He now lives in Salt Lake City, where he leads his own band and continues to play and write. " I would describe my current music as somewhat a mix between the avant garde jazz I grew up listening to, mixedwith the influence of the pop synth bands I played with in the 80's. The jazz influence taught me about expression and emotion. The pop side influenced my writing more than my playing. It taught me about finding drama in the music, allowing the melodies to tell a story with tension and release, rather than a story filled with run-on sentences that continue until the music ends.I like to find melodies that will take us on a journey."
