A retractable bamboo yurt that can be easily collapsed and moved anywhere for disaster relief effortsÂ
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to join the Wentworth Institute of Technology 2018 Bamboo Bali Graduate Travel Studio. For 10 days, we were immersed in Balinese culture, including six days at the Green School Bamboo U design-build program. I was part of a team prototyping a retractable bamboo yurt, a disaster relief structure that is easily collapsed, moved, re-erected and adapted to disaster relief anywhere in the world. Bamboo grows to a usable age in a fraction of the time most trees do, making it an accessible and sustainable alternative to wood in many areas of the world.
After planing, drilling, and sanding bamboo planks, we tied them together with rawhide strips, creating a retractable wall and roof.
