My topic is an exploration of how gentrification affects the local area, specifically within the realm of suburbanization and its culture. In South Carolina, the massive influx of wealthier individuals from the Northeast has created many issues for local, less well-off residents within the area who lack the economic power to prevent many historic neighborhoods, forests, and landmarks from being destroyed for the purposes of the tourist industry. Also, even though the tourist industry, which is the largest and most profitable in Horry County, is supposed to facilitate wealth to locals as well, that is not happening. On the contrary, where locals are experiencing higher costs of living especially in housing.

There are multiple different reasons why wealth has been poorly distributed in Horry County, including a lack of government involvement and racial discrimination. But the reason that is the most prominent is the large amount of influence wealthy non-locals have on the government and local ideology. Many individuals who suffer under the effects of poor wealth distribution do not blame the people who cause it, but rather shift their focus to a federal or governmental issue. This is a stance that is reinforced by local government leaders as a way to shift the blame and continue to idly allow issues like this to continue.
