Our Mission
Connecting Through Cards seeks to eliviate feelings of isolation among seniors in retirement homes by providing handmade cards that they can write and send out to friends and loved ones. There are many causes of isolation among seniors, some of which include a lack of independent transportation, limited knowledge of/access to technology, and geographical distance from loved ones. These are challenges that every resident faces, and while we can't stop feelings of isolation completely, we can provide residents with a way to reach out and become connected.
A card may seem like a small thing, but it is an opportunity for residents to connect with people near and far. A card can be given to a neighbor, or sent across the country. Our hope is that these cards also encourage the recipients to reach back out to our seniors. Sometimes, all it takes is a small note to make someone's day. A card can be kept on a bedside table, on a mantle, or around the house, and it serves as a reminder that someone is thinking about them. All it takes is a couple kind words. The seniors in our lives especially cherish those.
Our goal is to create high quality cards that these residents would feel proud to send to their family and friends. Recently, cards have gotten very expensive and while it may not make a difference to some, seniors are on fixed incomes and sending cards may become an expensive proposition. Connecting Through Cards offers the opportunity to send out these cards, without having to worry about the expense.
We provide these cards to seniors through Adopt a Retirement Home, cardmaking workshops at the facilities, and organizing community/school volunteers. More information is provided on our "Get Involved" page.
