IRB Research Project in Progress: More to come soon!
This project focuses on how 4 of the 6 critical life tasks in Integrative Life Planning (ILP) can be applied to the changing world and beyond.
Work that needs doing and that provides economic self-sufficiency → satisfying the needs of self, others, and the world
Pluralism and Social Inclusion → Diversity
Emotional, mental, and physical health → "Adequate rest, exercise, healthful eating, and a balanced pace can protect us from burnout"
Transition and organizational changes → New generation and use of technology within counseling
Integrating the 6 pivots in Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) with ILP - increasing students' psychological flexibility & counselors' cultural sensitivity.
How does ACT increases counselors cultural sensitivity?
Student around the world required a wholistic approach to counseling that looks can aligned with ILP.
Choi & Kim (2021) looked at South Korean undergraduate students' interaction with faculty members throughout the campus. According to the author, studies in the West have shown that interactions with faculty can positively affect students' growth. Nonetheless, Western and Korean college students are often unaware of the worth of student-faculty interactions, as many students do not reach out to the faculty members at their university. The writers argue that faculty should communicate with students with a broad set of topics from personal life, family and friends, career, and campus adaptiveness to help the student develop and grow. These broad set of topics aligned with the critical task of Integrative Life Planning (ILP), which fosters better support for college students' whole self instead of looking only at specific areas, such as only career topics.

Research***
Honoring the ideology of ILP reminds counselors to appreciate the multi-faceted dimensions of each of our client's internal world and external environment. With this holistic approach in mind, counselors are ready to understand more fully the narrative of a client. However, one common criticism of ILP is its lack of direction for concrete actions, which led people to think it is too vague to be applied in the real world. In addition, ILP was created for the adult population. On the other hand, ACT has very structured suggestions for actions to take. It has also been shown to be effective with clients ranging from preschool students to working adults.

Changes in technology are redefining the approaches and services that counselors can provide. This new changes can allow individual meetings to focus on other topics that affect students career decisions.
Technology is developing rapidly and affecting the new generations of college students. Career counseling services are trying to adapt to these changes and to better support college students. Brdesse & Alsaggaf (2002) investigated student satisfaction with electronic academic advising and course registration at Saudi Arabia university in two different years, 2018 when the programs were introduced, and 2020 when the system was improved. The authors said that universities with large numbers of students suffer a massive burden in academic advising; using electronic systems, such as AI, would help students and give more time to advisors to address other students’ issues. The virtual space allows students, advisors, faculty members, and university management to interact and communicate electronically (registration and withdrawal of courses, student plan, arranging meetings with advisors, study plans, etc.). Furthermore, according to the authors, AI academic advising without human involvement improved the efficiency and transparency of the advising process in higher education. The authors mention getting the idea from a similar study at Pennsylvania State University, where virtual registration processes have increased efficiency and student satisfaction. AI and other online resources can help students beyond satisfaction, as counselors can use their meeting time to check in on different critical tasks of ILP where students can be helped more holistically.
