Take Charge! Tackling Environmental Problems was a Lewis & Clark College CORE class offered in two sections during the Spring 2026 semester: One morning and one afternoon section. To formulate and structure our proposals, we worked in separate groups while utilizing shared resources and data. This website was formatted to differentiate between both classes and reflect our distinctive efforts, with Group A representing the work done by the morning section, and Group B reflecting the work done by the afternoon section. The classes reached two similar yet separate conclusions, and this website is intended to outline our distinct processes and solutions.
The data collected was shared between the classes.
Course Overview
History
This course was modeled on the first-semester course of Terrascope at MIT, which has been offered since 2000. Dr. Jessica Kleiss taught a version at L&C in 2021. Professor Liz Safran is deeply grateful to Dr. Kleiss and Dr. Ari Epstein at MIT for generously sharing their time and support as she developed this class.

Course Goal
The structure of this course was meant to mirror the difficulty experienced by those tackling the daunting challenges L&C currently faces surrounding transportation methods. Within this class, we were in charge of our own learning and held ourselves accountable for the steady progression of this project.
Our Accomplishments
We achieved this goal by:
Engaging with the difficult, real-world challenge of current transportation methods.
Discovering there is no "right" answer to this problem. We attempted to identify the best solution, knowing it would involve trade-offs and compromises.
Considering multiple perspectives within our methods, and incorporating positive change with fewer negative trade-offs for multiple different groups of people.
We regularly engaged with 29 alumni mentors throughout our process. They provided extensive feedback, helped us refine our ideas, and aided our ability to understand complex real-world problems.
If you'd like to learn more about our individual Alumni Mentors, see the slide deck below!
Acknowledgments
We would like to take the time to say we are extremely grateful for the assistance provided along the way from Professor Liz Safran and our course TA, Lucas Hausman. Not only them, but a big shoutout to Ari Epstein, Lucy Gray, who is a MIT terrascope undergraduate teaching fellow, alumni mentors, and lastly, the amazing student workers at the Watzek Library Writing Center who helped with several rounds of review. We thank them for all of their valuable time and assistance.
