Mental health is how people think, feel, and act. It impacts how we view ourselves and others, and as a result, how we handle stress, explore our environment, relate to others and make decisions. Mental health is an integral part of overall health. Optimal mental health can be achieved through the self-directed balancing of multiple aspects of life, in a manner that is consistent one's own personal values. This hierarchy, known as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, proposes that people approach optimal mental health as they meet their needs from the bottom to the top of the hierarchy:
Therapy is a process during which the therapist and the client are collaborating to improve the client's mental health by developing an understanding of the connection between past and present experiences and formulating achievable goals based on the client's values.
