Jasmine Crockett won the 2024 Democratic Primary by a landslide! She is also almost guaranteed her sophomore seat after the General elections because there is no Republican opponent. Jasmine had very minimal direct campaign effort in this election. However, through the election process and continuing after, Jasmine has been giving interviews and making countless tweets. Jasmine has garnered support because of her outspoken position taking.
Jasmine first got widespread attention by bringing receipts to the house floor. She continues to keep this energy in frequently speaking out against Donald Trump and Republicans, even bringing up their hate for her in her acceptance tweet.
David Mayhew theorizes that Congresspeople are "single minded seekers of reelection." This is because for Congresspeople to do any work, they must first get elected. Because of this, every aspect of congressional work is campaign work from voting to serving on committees to giving interviews. There are three kinds of activity that Congresspeople constantly participate in as campaign work: Advertising, Credit Claiming, and Position Taking.
While not Jasmine's main reelection seeking activity, the greatest example of advertising efforts, or those efforts just for name recognition, come in the form of retweets. Many PACs and organizations have posted flyers with Jasmine's name and picture. These work as advertisements because the posts are getting followers to recognize Jasmine's name and face while also connecting her to potential other congresspeople constituents may know. Crockett is also getting her name out there by visiting a university for Women's History Month. While this does not directly affect her constituents, it does create name recognition for herself outside of Texas if she were to ever run for another office.
Crockett has released countless press releases with evidence that she is getting the work done for TX-30. From getting government funding to introducing bills that directly affect her constituents. Jasmine shows, or hopes to show, that she listens to her constituents and votes in their favor.
Jasmine also showcases the evidence of her work on social media which seems to be working with one commenter stating "You might be one of the few people actually working in Congress."
Crockett's credit claiming activity is also shown in her constituent services that directly impact the people that will vote for her. These services range from passport help to tours of federal buildings. These services show that Jasmine is committed to serving her constituents' needs.
From calling MAGA Republicans "cult-like" to calling Marjorie Taylor Green an "idiot" to speaking out against the "Sleepy Joe" narrative, Jasmine is not afraid to voice her opinion. Congresswoman Crockett does not leave her constituents with questions on where she stands on most topics.
As it is seen, Jasmine is very anti-Republican. She frequently calls them liars in their meanings behind bills and activity in government. She also calls out these conservatives for painting false narratives while providing evidence and applying her personal experience and perspective as a marginalized person.
Jasmine is also very clearly supportive of rights, acceptance, and access for marginalized communities. Her messaging and work inside of Congress, such as co-sponsoring the Protect Black Women and Girls Act, showcases her promise of serving justice and ensuring equality for all.
It is clear that Jasmine's goal is to get reelected. She has, on multiple occasions, posted on social media about "taking the House back." It is also clear that Jasmine is very passionate about the issues she cares about. While does she post about her opinions purely out of passion or does she post to garner support for her next election? That is truly only decided by Congresswoman Crockett herself. However, as Mayhew describes, the only way for Congresspeople to continue the work they do is for them to get reelected. For this reason, it can be concluded that Crockett is a single minded seeker of reelection, however that does not have to be negative. Jasmine can be seeking to be reelected to represent her underrepresented, marginalized constituents. Jasmine can be seeking to be reelected to keep Congress in check and actually get the work done. Jasmine can be seeking to be reelected because she, herself, has experienced injustices in America and decided she wants to be the change.
