Because the school’s resources are limited, it will be necessary for most students to secure their own instrument by means of rental or purchase. Instruments, complete with care and maintenance kits, are available on a lease (or rent-to-own) basis. Our local music retailers are listed below:
Music and Arts: https://stores.musicarts.com/or/portland/music-store-5880.html
Beacock Music : http://www.beacockmusic.com/instrumentrentals.html
Beaverton Music Services: https://www.beavertonmusic.net/
Ricks Aloha Music: http://ricksalohamusic.com/
Portland Music Company: https://portlandmusiccompany.com/
If you are unable to purchase or rent an instrument from the music store, we have a limited supply of school owned rentals available. There is a $30 yearly rental fee. Parents and student are responsible to maintain the instrument during the time it is being loaned including paying for any necessary repairs due to negligence or accident. The instrument must be returned at the end of the school year, and a final inspection of playing condition will be performed before the student is released from responsibility.
A student’s instrument is his or her voice, and should serve them well for years to come. This is why selection is so critical. An instrument purchase need not empty the bank account, but quality and craftsmanship will certainly be worth more (thus cost more) than some of the less expensive options available. Please do not purchase instruments from Target, Costco, Amazon, Walmart, Ebay...unless the brand is off the list below. Also, do not purchase instruments that are a non-standard color. No purple flutes or green clarinets. These instruments are usually garbage within in a year. Should go wrong with the instrument (which occurs more often in these), repair shops often are not to fix them because they do not have compatible hardware or aren't sturdy enough to handle repair work.
Our local music retailers will have a variety of appropriate instruments and accessories available. If you are considering purchasing an instrument, new or used, I would be more than happy to provide you with more information. If you have any other questions regarding instrument or accessory purchases, feel free to contact me or check the brand recommendations below to help get you started.
