Blog: 20.10.17: There are many options to how could teach a mixed bag arrangement - hoping that all will get to the same outcome i.e. students playing the arrangement as a full class or small group ensemble including sections with improvisation.
I've developed a lesson plan focusing in the aural experience with the teacher modelling the rhythmic patterns using the Orff technique to cement the key two against 3 rhythmic pattern, then aurally learning the key melodies of the first section before translating to instruments.
Aural resources can be easily produced through Sibelius for the individual parts (and score) and provide to the students as a semi-informal learning method, for them to learn themselves in groups and perform their arrangement to the class. I've set up all the part scores so they can be accessed online here.
I’ve condensed this into one lesson, but the reality is that it would probably span over three to get the full version with improvisation as a quality performance (pending skill level). This would then also be integrated with other listening activities of other minimalist music examples and then move into their own composition using the “Baby steps” resources.
I’ve also included a guideline on improvisation to help assist with anyone who can be stuck on ideas on where to start with improvisation.
