Social trends can be defined as any type of activity that is participated in by society as a whole. Social trends are often the result of society’s reaction to some aspect of culture like a type of clothing or a genre of music. While trends are often prompted by cultural minorities, the majority of a society typically takes on the trend as their own. People experience trends as a community. Engaging in trends can allow people to develop a sense of togetherness. Trends can be long-lasting or short-lived. For instance, with the 2010s came a wave of new technology, including smartphones. Social media websites, like Instagram, also created a new way for people to communicate with each other. Some trends have changed the way people communicate with each other. Social media websites, including Facebook and Twitter, also helped facilitate trends. Social networking allows people from all around the world to see trends emerging anywhere else. Additionally, social networking allows social trends to last longer and make waves in different parts of the world.
We the team compass are looking at societal trends in a different view. In the lock down periods in Sri Lanka people were impounded to their homes and their lives became particularly boring. So, people spent their time on their smartphones and other devices (especially in social media like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter) So, many new societal trends were introduced in a different way. As we observed, societal trends were weighed much into the entertainment category.
The above graph shows what the people of Sri Lanka had searched for their entertainment in the past 12 months. In this category it is obvious that most people had searched for films. Other searches namely music, games and sports are not considerable as films because we can see a significant gap between films and other 3 searches.
As well as if we observe the flow of the ‘Films’ line we can notice some increases and some decreases. Those increases are flown in the lock down periods in Sri Lanka. In those periods people were bound to their homes and they definitely had attended on entertainment activities.
In addition to that we can see this in another view. When a popular film releases people search for films. So, some peaks of the ‘films’ line can be expected in those periods.
So however, that's how the lock down periods, promulgated due to Covid-19 pandemic, had made changes in the Entertainment category.
In this chart we can see a clear gap in between the four lines of Facebook, Youtube, Whatsapp and Instagram social media. So, it's obvious that most people had searched for Facebook but we can see a little bit of diminution in the flow of the line. The line for Youtube searches is quite constant. We can see an accumulation in the flow of whatsapp line. But, the searches for Instagram are low when compared with others. Normally, Instagram is not popular in Sri Lanka like other Social Media platforms. Maybe it is the reason for it’s low flow.
But, we can't come to a considerable conclusion on how the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown series came up as it’s impact had made changes on people's searches for social media platforms, with this chart.
Sri Lanka’s most popular work from home platforms are Office 365, Google Work Space and Zoom. Among these 3 platforms most people had searched for Office 365. It is a very comfortable platform for office work. As well as this, we can see many fluctuations in the flow of its line. People has to work from home when they were bound to their homes. So, we can see some accretions in those periods. So, that’s how people had searched for work from home platforms in the past 12 months.
When we come to this category we can see that the Learning Management platforms are the most searched platform of the category. It’s the most used platform in Sri Lanka. mostly for tuition classes and universities are using lms platforms in sri lanka As well as Google classroom is another popular education platform in Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka has an agricultural economy. With the Covid-19 pandemic situation the farmers who did cultivation became wretched unabling to sell their crop during the lockdown periods. So, their economy partially crashed.
As well as Tourism is another part of the Sri Lankan economy. In the lockdown periods people’s travelling was banned and the airports were closed. So, the people who had adjusted their economy on tourism, completely lost their economy. Not only that. The industries were also closed and the economies on that field were also brokedown. So, people in those fields had to move to other jobs to recover their economies.
So, we can see some fluctuations in the google searches for jobs chart. With the sudden loss of their jobs people had searched for jobs in the first part of the lockdown series. The line has risen in that period.
This map helps us to get a vivid image of people in what areas had the most interest in jobs in the past 12 months.
Above chart shows what internet service providers people of Sri Lanka had searched for in the past 12 months. The line of Dialog internet service provider, flows above all other 3 providers’ lines. It’s line has increased recently. The fluctuations of the chart shows how the lockdown had affected that category of searches.
SUMMERY
So, here we are ready to give our conclusion on societal trends analysis of Sri Lanka. Throughout our analysis we observed data on entertainment trends, social media trends, work from home platforms trends, trends of educational platforms and other trends like job trends and trends for internet service providers.
First of all let’s talk about the situation changing in Sri Lanka due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Mainly, there were 3 waves of the pandemic and the country was locked down mainly for 3 times (3 main lockdown periods). So, as a whole in the past year people’s daily routine was stuck for 3 times. People’s daily life was like ‘stuck and started, stuck and started’. This change affected people economically and mentally as well. This instability made the way to new societal trends and to people’s preferences for new platforms.
The changes in the entertainment category come after people’s mental needs, while all other categories are coming after the economy and on their daily routine. The fluctuations in the charts are a good example to show the instability of people’s daily routine in the past 12 years. So, that is how Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown periods came after it affected societal trends of Sri Lanka.
