Marcie Jacklin, a Fort Erie naturalist and environmental activist, is president of Community Voices of Fort Erie, a group leading the fight to save Waverly Woods from development. A site laden with historical, indigenous and environmental significance, Waverly Woods borders the lakeside Friendship Trail in Fort Erie and is a popular spot for recreation and reflection
However, access to much of the woods has been blocked off by the developer behind Harbourtown Village, a proposed subdivision which would see much of the woods consumed by high-density housing including a 10-storey condominium with 110 units, 66 single-detached lots, and 61 townhouse homes.
Community Voices of Fort Erie has painstakingly researched the potential negative environmental impact of the development and its conflict with existing municipal planning guidelines. After collecting more than 4,000 signatures on an online petition to save the woods, Community Voices has submitted an appeal of the development to the Ontario Municipal Board. The appeal has been accepted and the group is awaiting a hearing date. The group will need financial support to continue its work, which will include hiring a lawyer to lead the appeal at the OMB.
