Project Coordinator's profile
I, Heidi de Carlo have been an educator in a junior state school for the past 30 years of which my specialisation is focused on Inclusive Education in a mainstream setting. My involvement in several school and community projects in the past contributed to bring forth my artistic creations of which my perceptions have been transformed to execute ongoing research studies to acquire a wealth of knowledge based on recyclable materials and mosaic representations,
My teaching English experience with migrants enabled me to perceive the learners’ potential to produce an art piece in festivals. This facilitated bridging minority communities with the locals whereby these people were given a safe space to deliver a live presentation to the public incorporating an understanding of cultural relations. and an opportunity to express their human rights in a democratic society , claim their agency through cultural and artistic activities.
A creation of social networks and building relationships with local councils, non-governmental organisations, educational institutions and foreign entities inspired me to read for a Diploma on Adult Education at the University of Malta.
For me nature is a source of inspiration whereby a relationship is built with my artwork. Piece by piece I assemble these hand crafted units around the design’s outline to create harmony between one segment and another. From an aesthetic lens, each piece reflects balance and contrast within the colourful palette.
The Mosaic artist - Christina De Carlo
I form part of the artistic team with Msida Mosaic to teach, inspire and motivate the participants in creating mosaic. I studied Art and Design at MCAST where I exhibited two of my Final projects, a Carnival hat and a Room Divider at St James Cavalier.
While studying, I participated in foreign exchange projects where I helped create a mosaic about world unity. I have been a mosaic artist for six years improving my skills using recyclable materials, teaching the mosaic craft and exploring other mosaic techniques for innovation.
What fascinates me about mosaic is the small pieces put together create a picture. The colour in ceramic pieces as well as shape, pattern and texture let my creativity run wild to create other imaginary things from the recyclable materials available.
Rythm in my artistic performance incorporates the elements of pattern, colour, space and with a focus on line direction. As a hanging ornament, I assembled colourful units to create human movement in this mosaic representation.
The background of this mosaic piece was taken from a willow plate of which I focused on implementing some features of different forms of movement, pattern and contrast.
Over the years, I broadened my artistic horizons in creating arts and crafts, hairdressing, photography, building websites, content writing, social media, digital marketing visuals and video editing which are all things I enjoy doing.
