The feeling of nostalgia is something that permeates through each of us. We long for past experiences and feelings that remind of simpler, happier times. These formulative experiences gives us a sense of who we were and helps us to compare that to who we want to be in the future. This may seem like a strange thing to include in a pavilion about progress and ever changing technology, but Disney is using the growing nostalgia for bygone attractions to showcase the newest technologies at their disposable. Using a combination of VR tech, projections, scents, animatronics, puppets, and even some live performers, Way Back When will strive to bridge the past to the future.
Sponsored by Lumenarius, this multi-room attraction has its basis in projection technology. Every surface (walls, pillars, staircases, and even the floor) is covered with moving images invoking a past attraction. Along with the images, a signature song or background theme of that attraction will play for a cycle allowing guests to relive certain scenes and wander from room to room.
Something that separates Way Back When from other black box experiences, is the use of animatronics, puppetry, and live performers to accent what the guests are already seeing and hearing. Even scents, like fresh baked bread are pumped in for the Kitchen Kabaret scenes.

Buzzy animatronic in main room
military marching music when General Knowledge appears, and Buzzy's leitmotifs
Kitchen Kabaret:
Veggie, Veggie, Fruit, Fruit Song
Dr. Dairy Goodz, Ham & Eggs, and the Fiesta Fruit animatronics

Suite of Dreams: Discovery (song)
Maelstrom
low lying fog
sound of waves, and cackling of trolls
The animontronics for each scene are hidden in the pillars scattered through out the rooms. During show scenes without animatronics, these look like normal pillars. When the animatronics are needed, the top portion slides down into the base which keeps the figure out of reach of guests and allows for 360 viewing.
These are the examples of the stilt walkers and puppetry being used in the Tapestry of Dreams segment.
This type of fog is used mainly for the Maelstrom segment. The Journey into Imagination segment is after this giving that segment a dream-like quality but also giving the fog time to clear away for the other scenes.
The secondary portion of Way Back When is the VR experience. Step into one of several rooms to take a virtual journey through one Epcot's extinct attractions. Even if the ride is gone, this new experience will let guest look up down; front to back, and side to side as if they were riding the actual attraction. Once the goggled and headset are applied, guests will be able to ride the entire Journey into Imagination or Maelstrom. This 360 experience will also be aided by the chairs slight movements to simulate a very slight rocking motion of Maelstrom, or the turning motions of the Journey into Imagination ride vehicle.
