Instructions for Small Disposable Propane Cylinders
Disposable (non-refillable) MAP or Propane Cylinders meet the definition required and may be shipped as "Receptacle, Small Containing Gas" or "Gas Cartridge". The criteria is without release device, not refillable, and not exceeding 1 L capacity.
Must be in a DOT Spec cylinder (Generally DOT spec, ie. DOT-39). §173.304; §173.306
DOT 39 cylinders must be in strong outer packaging (Combination package) §173.301(a)(9)
Combination packaging must be marked with an indication that the inner packagings conform to the prescribed specifications (DOT 39) §173.301(a)(9)
Max net capacity of each inner package - 1L (1 lb of propane = 0.92 L at 25 C).
Max net capacity of each complete package to carry with Passengers - 1Kg (2.2 lbs or two cyl per package §172.101 col 9A)
Max net capacity of each Cargo Only complete package - 15Kg (33 lbs §172.101 col 9B)
No limit for the number of complete packages
The following must be displayed on the same side of the outer package:
The proper name and material ID number (UN2067)
The Flammable Gas
"contains DOT-39 cylinders"
The Name and address of the shipper
Receptacle, Small containing gas or Gas Cartridge
