Pinecrest Academy of Nevada - Cadence Campus believes in preparing students for the technological age through the educational usage of digital tools to enhance learning outcomes. Currently, every elementary classroom (K-5) boasts a 1:1 ratio with each student issued a laptop for instructional use during the school day. PAC middle school and high school students are issued Chromebooks for use both at school and home. With a simple click of the mouse, students can use the school's website to access programs from personal computers to extend their learning at home as well.
Technology plays an integral role in student learning every day at Pinecrest. Digital platforms are used by teachers to provide engaging instruction to support our rigorous curriculum. This is not limited to STEM. Students and teachers have access to various programs to help support learning. For example, i-Ready Reading, Renaissance Accelerated Reader, Renaissance MyON Reader, FastForword, McGraw Hill Connect Ed, Springboard, and Canvas are sites our teachers and students use to promote leveled literacy instruction. Access to these programs affords our students the opportunity to grow as competent readers and writers. These essential literacy skills are critical when helping our students become adept STEM researchers and communicators.
In addition to literacy instruction, PAC has invested in key programs to support mathematics. Reflex Math provides engaging math fact fluency practice for our students. i-Ready Math and Ready Classroom Mathematics provides teachers the tools to enhance standards-based math instruction while also providing students with individualized learning pathways to drive personal growth. Pinecrest also utilizes the ST Math blended learning program to help students build critical thinking skills as they solve rigorous mathematical problems. The program’s challenging games build students’ number sense through visual learning. These programs, combined with the rigor and cross-curricular activities provided by the teachers at Pinecrest, ensure students foundational skills are being met.
At Pinecrest, our mission is to prepare students for college and career. With that in mind, students are guided to generate projects using various digital tools. Even our youngest PAC students are taught to utilize online research tools to gather information for projects. Through our partnership with Edutainment Learning, students can interact with live guest speakers from various STEM backgrounds to help facilitate their research. Students are also given opportunities to use digital programs such as PowerPoint, Google Slides, Powtoon, and Wevideo to create projects tailored to their unique goals.
Students in upper elementary grades utilize Google Classroom to help facilitate instruction and opportunities for meaningful collaboration. Teachers use Google Classroom as a platform for students to complete assignments and access materials that help drive instruction. Students also use the tool to work collaboratively on projects, getting real-time feedback from peers as well as the teacher. This digital platform allows student to develop their creativity and critical-thinking skills while honing their ability to communicate and collaborate effectively utilizing technological tools, better preparing them for the expectations of middle and high school.
Project Lead the Way is designed to meaningfully incorporate technology into its modules. In PLTW Launch units, e-books are used to stimulate interest into a real-world problem and foster collaborative conversations. After which, students are guided to use various digital tools, such as Poplet and Kahoot, to organize ideas, track data, and demonstrate learning throughout the design process.
