OVERVIEW

Objectives

The COESS Project Founded in 2022 in order to promote studies and conservation of submarine seeps sites along the coastal margins of Japan. Endorsed by UNESCO as an action project of the United Nations Ocean Decade, COESS (Chemistry, Observation, Ecology of Submarine Seeps) promotes public awareness of the importance of seeps, and their unique ecology. In addition, the group aims to study the relationship between seep gas emissions input into the oceans and atmosphere over time.

COESSプロジェクトは、日本沿岸の海底湧水地の研究と保全を推進するために2022年に設立されました。COESS（Chemistry, Observation, Ecology of Submarine Seeps）は、ユネスコから承認され「海の10年」のアクションプロジェクトです。海底湧出域とその特有の生態系の重要性についての認知を広める活動を行なっています。さらに、このプロジェクトでは、海洋への湧出ガスの排出と大気との相互関係と、それが時間と共にどのように変化していくのか研究することを目的としています。

Importance of marine cold seeps

Cold seeps host unique biological communities, from microbial mats to a variety of macrofaunal inhabitants such as snow crabs, mollusks, and squid.
As potential sites for hydrocarbon exploration, it is important to know the potential environmental impact of commercial activities.
The microbial communities in such sites provide a proxy for early life on earth, while also allowing some insight into potential microbial life on other planets.

海底から冷たい水やガスが湧出する「冷湧水」海域では、微生物マットからズワイガニ、軟体動物、イカなどの大型動物まで、ユニークな生態系が確立されています。
メタン等の炭化水素資源の調査場所として、商業活動が冷湧水域の環境にどのような影響を与えるか知ることは重要です。
高圧・低温の極限環境に生息する冷湧水海域の微生物群集を理解することは、生命の起源や他の惑星に存在する微生物群集の謎を理解する鍵となります。

海底から熱水が噴出する「熱水噴出」海域ではカニや軟体動物など、様々な大型生物が生息しています。
資源としてのレアメタルの調査地として熱水噴出域に商業活動がどのような影響を与えるか知ることは重要です。
高圧・高温という極限環境である熱水噴出域の微生物群集を理解することは、地球や他の惑星の生命の起源を明らかにするための重要な情報となります。

Hydrocarbon and hydrothermal seeps in Japan and the circum-Pacific.

The increased interest in both hydrocarbons associated with cold-seep plumes and rare earth metals associated with submarine hydrothermal deposits has highlighted an urgent need to study the ecosystems associated with them before they potentially become the object of commercial activity. In addition, the monitoring of these systems requires the development and deployment of instrumentation which can determine both baseline and natural variability of seafloor conditions around these seeps.

商業的開発に向けて海底冷湧水の炭化水素資源や熱水に伴う希土類金属の利用への関心が高まっており、海洋底の湧水における生態系の理解が急がれています。COESSプロジェクトでは、湧水噴出口周辺の海底環境と自然変動の両方を観測できる機器の開発と、それを用いた調査を行なっています。

Project Goals

Provide a research platform for offshore studies of seep ecology
Promote the testing of cutting-edge technologies for long-term seafloor monitoring
Promote public understanding of hydrothermal and cold seeps both as resources but also as important ocean ecosystems
Promote the establishment of submarine seep sanctuaries for future research and biological preservation
Provide shore-based outreach activities for students and communities to learn about cold seeps and hydrothermal activity in coastal areas

熱水・冷湧水を資源としてだけでなく、重要な海洋生態系として広く一般に理解してもらうこと。
将来の研究と生態系保護のための海底湧水のサンクチュアリの整備を推進すること。
学生や地域住民に向けて、沿岸域の海底冷湧水や熱水活動について理解してもらうためのアウトリーチ活動を行うこと。
