About

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has visualized an active role in dealing with new directions and concerns emerging from various day to day environmental problems. In order to give a concrete shape to this visualization, IIT Guwahati established a full-fledged Centre for the Environment, in May 2004. It started an interdisciplinary PhD research programme from the academic year 2005-2006.

As of now, the Centre has 30 faculty members across various departments of the Institute involved in providing guidance to the students. The Centre has well-furnished laboratories namely Analytical, Computational and Research I and Research II Labs. In addition, the Centre is hosting the Institutional Biotech Hub funded by DBT, GoI.

Significance of the Day

Observing the International Day of Biological Diversity holds immense importance in our collective efforts to address the global environmental challenges we face. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role that biodiversity plays in sustaining life on Earth. By bringing attention to the vast array of plant and animal species, ecosystems, and genetic diversity, we recognize the intrinsic value of nature and its fundamental contribution to human well-being. It prompts us to reflect on the impacts of human activities, such as habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change, on biodiversity loss. Observing this day helps to raise awareness, foster a deeper understanding of our interdependence with nature, and mobilize action to protect and restore ecosystems. It provides a platform to showcase successful conservation initiatives and encourages individuals, communities, governments, and organizations to come together in taking concrete steps towards preserving biodiversity and creating a sustainable future for all.Â
