Writing, Reading, Speech Assistance (WRSA): Part of the Learning Commons, WRSA is staffed by professional and peer coaches who work one-on-one with students, both in-person and online, to help them with writing, reading, and speeches and presentations. WRSA coaches can come to your classes to give your students an overview of WRSA services, as well as to present interactive workshops on writing-related topics. The WRSA is open seven days a week during most of the semester.
Counseling & Advising: Urge your students (especially in October and March) to meet with an academic counselor or program adviser every semester before they register for classes. They should visit SSC 3200 or call 630-942-2259 to make an appointment. Academic and mental health counselors are available to work with students in crisis as well. In an emergency, call x2000 from your classroom phone, or 630-942-2000 from your cellphone.
Student Referral | Early Alert: Use this system to refer students who are frequently absent or not interacting in an online class, or who are not turning in work. After logging into MyAccess, you can enter a student referral directly from the checkbox in your Class Roster, or from the Student Referral Entry link in the Faculty Menu. The system is best used early in the semester, so that counselors' outreach is timely in helping students.
COD Library: Contact Jason Ertz, our liaison librarian for English and ELS, for support in both F2F and online classes--especially English 1102. He and other librarians can help with teaching particular Information Literacy learning outcomes you might require in your courses, as well as assist you in developing assignments to encourage such outcomes. The COD Librarians also offer regular workshops and webinars that students can attend on their own time, and they maintain up-to-date information on source citation on their website. If you want to put items on reserve, both physical and electronic, for all your students to access, the library can help you do that as well.
Center for Access and Accommodations: Provides accommodations to students with documented disabilities, in compliance with federal legislation, to ensure equal access to the educational environment. Qualified students receive a “blue card” which identifies them as being eligible for accommodations while protecting their privacy (students are not required to disclose the nature of their disability to faculty). At the beginning of each term, faculty receive a list of their students who are registered with us; these students may or may not ask for accommodations, and it is the student's responsibility to approach the instructor. Universal Design for Learning maximizes learning for all students and provides students with multiple means of expression and engagement.
