Woodson Lacrosse on Key Biscayne

Woodson Lacrosse is happy to announce two programs for the fall of 2018, that will provide an opportunity for more youth to be involved in the growth of the sport in Miami. Both the Skill Development Program and the Small Ball program are designed to improve the skills sets of the participants involved, while having fun in that pursuit. Each will be staffed by talented coaches and players from the area.

Skill Development Program

The Woodson Lacrosse Skill Development Program is a series of 8 sessions designed to teach and improve participants’ fundamental skill sets. Footwork and balance, passing and catching, dodging and defense. The program will, initially, not utilize any pads. We want to create a contact-free learning environment that encourages players to push their boundaries. For example, a partner passing drill is only as effective as the willingness of the partners to push themselves. In the same drill, two beginners may be focused on their form and accuracy, while two experienced players will be focused on the speed at which they can get the ball in and out of their sticks. For some drills, players will be divided into groups based on their level of experience. By the end of 8 weeks, we will have given participants plenty of drills that they can use on their own to continue to develop themselves once the program is over.

Small Ball Program

The Woodson Lacrosse Small Ball Program is an 8 week series of co-ed pick-up style lacrosse games designed to work on players’ skill sets and endurance by speeding up the game and playing within a more confined space. The only necessary equipment is a Similar to pick-up style basketball, two teams will take the field, one team will have “next” and the winning team will stay on the field. Games will either be 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5 based (each creating a different level of difficulty), based on the number of players that show up. As an incentive, individual player goals and assists will be kept throughout the season, as will total wins. Each week, players will add to their totals and league leaders will be recognized at the end of the last game on October 28th.

  • Games will be 3v3, 4v4, or 5v5 (each creating a different level of difficulty), based on the total number of players that show up on that day.
  • For player totals, 2 points will be awarded for an assist and 1 point will be awarded for a goal (5 goals, 7 assists = 19 points). This is to encourage ball movement.
  • There will be no faceoffs. The winning team begins on defense.

  • There is a crease around the goal. Ball must enter the goal before a player steps foot in the crease.
  • When the ball goes out of bounds, play must be resumed with a pass from outside the boundary of play (unlike regular lacrosse where a player must step on the field, and play can be resumed by running).
