Photographic collages with juxtaposing images - utilising/re-using old photographs.
Merve Ozaslan is a Turkish collage photographer born in Istanbul, graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University 2010, started creating photographic collages in 2012. Connecting both the old and the new to create a juxtaposing piece - lifeless urban city with the vibrancy of scenic landscapes.
Ozaslan's work consists of two images sliced together. It creates quite an interesting concept, like a window to a whole new view of life.
Slicing the landscapes into certain parts of the photograph, for this image it's displayed within the hoops. Exposing two different views of the children playing, depicting them on land and within water. The texture of the water is further enhanced, I think that colour has a huge impact as instead of keeping the images fully in colour he is only focusing on just the scenic view placed in a way which feels organic.
It's incredible how he uses the shapes and structures within the natural grey scale photograph and use natural colours to juxtapose the mundane life.
Keeping within the theme of shapes and colours, his work creates an outstanding view on life. The inclusion of natural movement of humans, doing everyday tasks to the deep contrast in architectural buildings.
I will be taking inspiration in re-using old photographs and creating new images. I won't be taking any new photographs but experiment with old photographs taken from last year's projects or printed film photographs.
I want to keep the vintage feel to the photographs but include modern day photographs to overlay on certain parts.
I will also take images of scenery from postcards from secondary sources, as it will be difficult to take interesting scenic views in December.
Primary Recourse:
The main portion of photographs will be old print photographs of my parent's childhood - their photos of them and their family.
I love the way how all the prints have ages and have a vintage feel and look to them, though, some of the images have darkened or faded as they were taken on an old film camera way before 2000.
For this artist, I will mainly be looking for images that have enough background space or elements where I can edit in another image. Photographs that have been taken from quite a far shot rather than a close up.
PHOTOSHOP PROCESS :
Edit the images and open onto photoshop
I further edited by changing the base image to black and white
Using the polygonal lasso tool - select certain parts of the photograph
Remove the selected areas (ctrl + x)
Open up another image and place it under the base image layer.
ctrl + t to move the placement of the photo.
Added a vignette filter on top of the images - to make the pieces more coherent
EXPERIMENTATION :
Experimented with different placements and overlays. Changing the underlayer photographs and which subjects it will replace.
DIGITAL RESPONSE :
TRADITIONAL RESPONSE :
Experimenting with creating physical responses. Using a cutting mat and knife to careful crop out parts of the subject images and then placing the scenic photograph underneath.
