Experimental Frame photographer - straight photography
For this photographer, I will be doing everything physically - by going to various locations and using actual frames instead of using photoshop to crop in a frame. I thought about experimenting with photoshop; however, I feel like it will be better to try and recreate it on how she did it. I will also be experimenting with different ways to frame; using picture frames, polaroid, natural frames in the scenery or with objects.
The picture frames are on a much smaller scale compared to Burtea's where it covers a large field/view.
Ioana Burtea uses various frames from different colours to the thickness of the border; also experimenting with colours of the final image. Burtea creates quite interesting pieces as she further enhances and the photograph to change the saturation or blurriness from the background or within the frame.
This is one of the pieces I take the most interest from as she is using the frame in a way to make that certain section more colourful than the rest; it makes you imagine that the world is in greyscale and taking photographs of anything can brighten the persons perspective.
The frame doesn't just capture colours within the border, but it subtly blurs outward of the frame. Her photographs are mainly taken in an outdoor environment, mainly in a countryside or large field. Her photographs have quite an organic feel to them as the colour's aren't too vibrant or bold but rather muted down slightly.
S E T U P :
I took apart old picture frames and used the frames as a viewing window similar to how Ioana Burtea creates her photographs. (I also used the glass place holder for BONNINSTUDIO)
For the picture frames I will be doing 1 shoot per frame and for thee polaroid I will be splitting it into 2 shoots (16 total polaroid's split between 2 shoots - 8)
I decided to do something different for this photoshoot and used polaroid film to recreate the double image. I had different ideas in ways I could experiment with her style.
Took polaroid pictures within the city and around landscapes (botanical garden). I wanted to not only match where these were originally taken but also mix and match the locations.
The top row were photographs taken in Birmingham.
Bottom were taken in Manchester - Fletcher Moss Park + Piccadilly Gardens bus stop
Polaroids which didn't work.
I retook the polaroid photograph so that the exposure will be much brighter and noticeable as compared to the first its quite dark/faded.
The second image didn't work as well as the colours darkened; overexposed.
EDITING PROCESS :
Raw Image.
Rotated to make it straight + edited the brightness/saturation.
Edited - Greyscale.
ISO 200
8.0
1/200
Using photoshop I stacked both edited versions on top of each other - with the black and white layer above.
Using the eraser tool I removed parts of the image to reveal the colours from beneath to replicate Ioana Burtea's style - colour leaking from the frame/image.
Mask tool + brush function.
Edited finer details within the polaroid separately to the background. I am able to enhance or change the brightness or contrast of the polaroid as in some lighting the image isn't as noticeable or is too dark.

Canon 600D, 18-55mm lens,
For this piece I wanted to have the main focus be within the centre. I experimented with colours and ways to tone down the background/negative spaces. I used motion blur to create this type of movement whilst also framing the buildings inside.

EXPERIMENTAL RESPONSE: (POLAROIDS)
Experimentational responses; looked further into still photographs placed within familiar places. Mixing different locations to create an illusion that it's real.

Canon 600D, 18-55mm lens,
I edited different versions of the same image together to create 1 main piece. (4 images sliced together).
I wanted to have both of the vans focused but without including any of the other objects around it, as it made the image too cluttered. I made it so that the vans are both highlighted with colour while the rest are quite muted.

UNSUCCESSFUL IMAGES :
ISO 400 8.0 1/200
I like the colours and the concept of capturing the bike covered with vibrant flowers and how it stands out in an area with no life - elements of nature within a modern city.
However, I don't think it works as well as i thought due to the simplicity of the photograph, and how I just made the outer areas of the frame greyscale. I don't think it works visually as the area where the bike was taken is already in a dull almost black and white area.

I took a photo using the polaroid camera and came back a few days later to retake this image in the same exact location.
The saturation of this image is far to vibrant compared to Burtea's frame works. I think that matching the photographs to the same location is simple or something that can be done digitally. Elements like the colours and contrast of the photographs don't work as well to match her style, whilst the Polaroid film is far to contrasted or dark.
