BONNINSTUDIO
E X T E N D E D
E X T E N D E D
Flat photography which uses viewing windows/shapes - focus on facial features and body parts.
Bonninstudio is a collective studio that creates all sorts of images for different themes, mainly creating stock photographs.
From my past project, I had taken inspiration from the same artist; however, I will be doing this different (extended version) as I wasn't as satisfied with the results. For this project I will be incorporating paints and colours instead of fully replicating this studio's style.
Using colours paints or coloured paper as the out space with a viewing space to capture the different facial features.
I will experiment with the different shapes instead of focusing on just the triangular shapes.
This photograph is interesting as it incorporates empty space with a small shaped window, revealing a certain part of the body behind it. It focuses on areas that have texture or places which create harsh shadows. Similar to using a viewing square - mainly using cut out triangular shapes on paper to create a frame.
The images have quite a unique feel and expressions, almost something you would see in a horror film poster due to the dynamic/shocking facial expressions along with the black and white finish.
I like the use of harsh shadows created behind by the card/paper and texture within the skin/ details within the eyes. It focuses our attention to a certain part of the body for this case the pupil/eye - the shape of the viewing window draws out eyes to the centre even if the image isn't aligned in the middle.
You can feel the expression in this person's eye, displaying that they're shocked or alarmed by something they have seen as their eye is wide open and looking at an angle.
Linking back to the project, the idea of using cut out shapes to frame different facial expressions or even body parts is quite different to how framing usually is portrayed as - displaying inanimate objects within a frame or preserving/capturing memories or images within a border.
I will experiment with different shapes alongside placing the frame in more places of the body. Their portraiture work gives only a section of the actual image, forcing us to visual where and what the subject is.
P L A N :
Example/Demo.
I will be using sheets of paper to create a cut out windows in various different shapes, alongside the infamous triangular shapes.
Sheets of plain/scrap pieces of A4 paper/card I will carefully cut out shapes near to the centre.
Using a Tripod to get a clear angle/shot.
I will also be experimenting with using liquids to create a blurry/ distorted effect, but instead aiming outside of where the main focus will be.
Using a piece of glass from an old picture frame, I will be experimenting with hand sanitizer, water and hair gel to create different effects - applying it onto the glass.
I will also experimented with using different camera lenses to get a more accurate photograph in capturing skin texture and eye details.
Using a different set up and light placement to get a better result which included more harsher shadows.
I used hair gel on one of the glass panels and for the other I used hand sanitizer.
Hair gel - much more thicker and dries much slower. Has more air bubbles and creates more spikier textures on the surface; the light reflected much more.
Hand sanitizer - much smoother and thinner. Dries quite quickly and creates this water like effect. Created bigger strokes resembling water ripples.
BRIDGE EDITING PROCESS :
Edited in Black and white (B&W)
Increasing the contrast and brightness
Lowering the highlights and blacks to make up for the high contrast
Increased the shadows to become more harsh

EXPERIMENTAL RESPONSE
ADDITIONAL INSPIRATION - NICK FANCHER
I will also be taking inspiration from Nick Fancher's distortion pieces and incorporating them into BONNINSTUDIO's works. I think that experimenting with this type of style will match or link with the horror and bold type of feel.
I originally wanted to incorporate colour, however, I think that that takes away from the overall style and feel to their original pieces which are in black and white.
MY EXPERIMENTAL RESPONSE :
Using a tripod and a remote, I experimented with myself as a model - capturing different angles/placement. I wanted to capture a similar take to how BONNINSTUDIO creates these expressive almost eerie type photographs but using different mediums to replace cut out paper.
