Self-portrait photographer; combines her body, plants and mirrors with the use of muted colours.
'Constantly Exploring the balanced state of peaceful coexistence between humans and nature.'
Born in 1990 in China, graduated from the University of Technology Sydney in 2015 and started photography in 2018. Independent photographer based in Shanghai. Primarily working in the topic of portraiture, her works incorporate elements on nature, plants, body, mirror images and reflections. Her works rarely capture her full face (facial features) because she wants the viewer to imagine that the body in the picture can be anyone.
Ziqian Liu has two main themes one of which being the symbiosis between humans and nature as we all live a state of balance both human beings and plants remain equal - 'we live in the same world, breathing the same air, mutual tolerance.'
The second theme is about perspective; things we are familiar with often stay in a fixed image, but through her works it's to look at the same subject in different angles to disclose different things.
Her works incorporates both portraiture and the aspects of nature. For this image she focuses on the themes of reflection with the use of mirrors. Forcing our attention to the centre where all the details are held, by focussing the camera onto the main part of the mirror - using a small f-stop number which results in the blurring of the outside elements.
I love how she has a specific style and technique which makes her works easy to identify and what makes her portfolio pieces unique. The use of a simple/neutral colour palette of warm earthy tones; and the constant use of circular mirrors. Ziqian Liu also uses rectangular shaped mirrors, but rounded mirrors give her works a smooth and quite flowing feel to sharp and edged objects. Also incorporating the use of negative spaces in each of her pieces, a wide space of matching colours.
Her photographs have quite an elegant and classy feel to them with the type of clothing she wears to the way she is posed. Creating different compositions but keeping within the limited palette of items - mainly the use of a circular mirror offset by the fruits or flowers.
Just how Liu creates her images, I will use myself as the main subject/model for these images and experiment with different angle reflections and colour palettes for each photograph. Also having a small range of fruits and flowers, limiting myself on how many objects/elements to have. I want to have a small enough range so that I can create a variety of images by combining or changing layouts. Little amounts of materials go a long way and for this case Ziqian Liu reuses quite a lot of flowers and fruits in her series.
