Modern photographic collages.
John Stezaker is a British conceptual artist known for his modern photographic collages.
His works re-examines the relationships in photographic images: as documentation of truth, purveyor of memory, and symbol of modern culture. In his collages, Stezaker appropriates images found in books, magazines, and postcards.
For this artist, I will focus on gathering a variety of old images and landscapes. I will look through old family pictures and pictures from parents and scan them into photoshop to be further edited into a collage. Each of his images has a vintage/old fashioned feel from the image quality/style to the types of hairstyles and clothing.
The ideas of his works are quite simple, however, the overall feel and the way it is presented/displayed makes his work more thought together. The image collaged on top of the portrait picture matches either by the shape of the landscape to the face - it connects to create a new piece.
For this piece of work, the sloped hill with the castle on top matches the outline of the woman's head. Each of the landscapes is pasted over the head to create a new 'face'. Stezaker merges both portraiture and landscape photography together and makes the image more than a simple collage. Looking more at each of his pieces you can see he carefully pics which images would work well together focussing more on the outlines which flower together - the slopes of the hills, the shapes of rocks or just the simple curves of trees/land.
Primary Recourse:
The main portion of photographs will be old print photographs of my parent's childhood - their photos of them and their family. Selecting photographs that will be appropriate for this project and scan them to create a digital file. Further editing to create a similar style.
I love the way how all the prints have ages and have a vintage feel and look to them, though, some of the images have darkened or faded as they were taken on an old film camera way before 2000. For John Stezaker's style, I will focus primarily on close up shots of faces to then further add an image which links over it.
There might be some issues with the quality of the images, mainly for this artist, I would have to crop the image enough so that the faces are the main focus - majority of the old photographs are taken from a distance rather than close up shots.
Experiment with certain images and test out which photographs I will use for the final outcomes. But I think there will me many issues with quality.
