What is Wakhan corridor? Why does its population need help ?

Wakhan Corridor has been created during the "Great Game" rivalry as a buffer between the Russian and the British empires. It is long and narrow piece of land of high altitude which stretches until China between Panj River and Hindu Kush range separating it from Tajikisan and Pakistan. Life has always been very difficult in Wakhan, this forgotten and isolated region cut from the world behind closed borders. It is one of the poorest regions of Afghanistan, one of the poorest countries of the world. However, until recently, it was safe and peaceful. The fall of Wakhan under Taliban's rule dismantled the fragile balance, which allowed the population to satisfy its reasonable and limited daily needs.

Wakhan is a corridor stretching east from Ishashim to China border between Tajikistan (north) and Pakistan (south).
