Step Five

Continuing on!

5a. Continuing to develop the motif, you will extend to write a 2-3 minutes composition by extending your ideas.

5b. To make the music more interesting, you could change the instrumentation like in Ravel's orchestral version of 'Pictures at an Exhibition' - have different instruments play different parts of the motif.

5c. The developed motives can be layered upon each other to vary texture.

5d. The ostinato can also be develop the same way as the motif too!

5e. Choose a title for your composition!

5f. Additional challenge:

  • If you want to go step further, choose another artwork of the same artist and repeat the process of creating a motif and developing it. Then add this to your composition to have contrasting ideas in your music.
