The rhizome characteristic of Interchange is intended as a metaphor. Rhizomes are connective structures that constantly flex and change. Rhizomes are multidimensional in form. The drawings and paintings of rhizomes, existing on a flat surface are intended to reveal a general complexity of the structure.

"Interchange1" is another work based on an interest in layering and emergent, rhizomatic composition.
Artists work from desire and these examples reflect my desire to experiment with mark-making and composition. De Kooning once said, that coming to terms with abstract composition is akin to forming a perfect sphere without the use of calipers. I use my spatial judgement to develop composition. In the end, I am trying to catch a "glimpse" (another de Kooning euphemism) of the inexpressible. Expressing the inexpressible is a studio preoccupation I am constantly involved in.
Rhizome 14 currently on the cover of "Enacting Praxis," by Kelly Vaughn and Isabel Nunez.
My paintings are characterized by a lot of drawing and mark-making with paint! The works are autobiographical with references to my experiences in the woods of Northern Indiana as a boy, my observations of schools and their affect on children and my interest in anthropology and psychology.
While at the TAB Institute, I was able to develop these four pictures with acrylic paint! They are approximately 9 x 7 inches each.
