Also, look up decriminalizing homelessness, Beaverton’s initial ban on homeless camping (criminalizing homelessness and violating the 8th Amendment after Boise v Martin, their Safe Parking Program. Find out even more at the National Homelessness Law Center). Beaverton and Washington County currently will NOT have any shelters open for STUDENTS or families this winters. There were 321 identified unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness in Beaverton in the 2019-20 school year. Second Home was started in Beaverton to provide host homes for unaccompanied youth. We currently need more host homes, so please consider Second Home. They do an exceptional job matching students with families, use the City of Beaverton’s mediation services for each pairing to create a unique contract, etc.

Second Home is a phenomenal organization that helps unaccompanied students in Oregon by matching them with host families. Second Home is an outstanding program and their students have some of the highest graduation rates of any demographics in the district and state!! Learn more here!

February/March 2020 House Bill 4039 would provide funding to Oregon Unaccompanied Youth by funding host homes and youth shelters. It had bi-partisan support and was set to pass in the Oregon Legislature until the walkout shutdown the government. Please encourage your representative to restart and pass this bill for unaccompanied youth.
