Yes. Everyone starts somewhere. Our Intro to Aerial Dance classes are designed specifically for first-time students with no aerial, dance, or gymnastics experience. All skills are introduced in a clear, beginner-friendly format with guided instruction and supportive coaching throughout class.
Your first aerial class introduces the fundamentals of aerial movement in a beginner-friendly format. Classes begin with a grounded mat warm-up and conditioning to prepare the body, followed by instruction on basic skills and shapes on the apparatus. Your instructor will demonstrate each movement and guide you step-by-step with modifications and support as needed. No prior experience is expected—everything is taught from the ground up at a pace that prioritizes safety, comfort, learning, and fun.
We train on a variety of aerial apparatus, including Aerial Silks, Aerial Hammock (also known as Sling), Double Hammock, SpanSets (also known as Aerial Loops), Dance Trapeze (also known as Static Trapeze), Aerial Net, and multiple Lyra (also known as Aerial Hoop) configurations.
Safety is our top priority in all aerial dance classes. We use structured instruction, progressive skill development, and close instructor supervision and spotting to ensure students learn in a controlled environment. We also follow established safety protocols and studio rules to maintain consistency and safety across all classes. All equipment meets safety standards, is regularly inspected, and appropriate mats are used throughout class. Skills are always taught based on experience level and readiness. Rigging at both locations has been inspected by a certified professional rigger. In addition, Carissa holds a FoFE: Practical Applications / Performer Rigging – Level 1 certification from Fight or Flight. While aerial dance is a physical activity that involves some inherent risk, we take every precaution to minimize risk and provide a safe, well-supported training environment.
That is very common, especially for first-time aerial students. Classes are designed to introduce height gradually, and you are always in control of your movement and comfort level. Most work begins close to the ground, allowing you to build confidence through familiarization before gradually progressing to higher positions as you feel ready.
Yes. Aerial dance is a full-body workout that builds strength, endurance, grip strength, core stability, and mobility. It engages multiple muscle groups at once and is an effective way to improve overall functional fitness while learning a creative movement practice.
We offer aerial dance classes for kids (ages 5+), teens, and adults. Each program is designed to be age-appropriate, focusing on safe technique, skill development, and appropriate physical conditioning for each stage of learning.
Yes. Drop-in classes are available when space allows. This is a great option for students who want to experience aerial dance before purchasing a class package or enrolling in ongoing training. Contact us to see if there is space to drop in: CloudNineAerialDance@gmail.com.
No prior fitness level is required. Our Intro-level aerial dance classes are designed for complete beginners. Students naturally develop strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance over time through guided instruction and consistent practice. As the body adapts, movements become progressively more accessible.
No. You do not need prior upper-body strength to begin. Strength develops gradually through class participation, with movements modified and built progressively to support all levels of ability.
Aerial dance can feel physically challenging at first because it engages the entire body and introduces movement in the air. Our classes are designed to make learning manageable by breaking skills into clear, achievable steps. With consistency, students typically see steady improvement in both ability and confidence.
Some discomfort is normal when beginning aerial training. Light bruising, muscle soreness, or temporary pressure sensitivity may occur as the body adapts to the apparatus. These sensations typically decrease as technique and familiarity improve.
Aerial dance is a gradual skill-building practice. Strength, coordination, flexibility, and confidence all develop over time. Progress varies from person to person, and consistency plays the most important role in long-term improvement.
Most students see noticeable progress with consistent weekly attendance. Taking class 1–2 times per week allows the body to build strength, coordination, and confidence at a sustainable pace. Progress develops through repetition and regular exposure to skills, so consistency is more important than intensity. We typically recommend attending two classes per week for faster development, though all students improve at their own pace with steady practice.
Proper attire is required for safety and comfort.
Please wear:
Long sleeves or fitted tops that cover the underarms and torso
Leggings or athletic pants that fully cover the legs
Clothing that protects skin from direct contact with the apparatus
Please avoid:
Jewelry (rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc.)
Zippers, Velcro, or metal hardware
Lotions or oils (they can make equipment slippery and unsafe)
Additional guidelines:
Hair must be secured away from the face
Nails should be short and trimmed (hands and feet)
Water bottle
Positive attitude and willingness to learn
Photos are welcome at the end of class, as photography during instruction can be distracting. You are welcome to share your own images and tag us (@Cloud9AerialDance)—we love seeing your progress! Please always ask permission before photographing or sharing images of other students or instructors to help maintain a respectful and supportive studio environment.
Ongoing students may purchase class packages of 4 or 8 classes, valid for one year from the date of purchase. We do not offer refunds; however, class credits may be transferred to another class or student when needed. Drop-in classes are pay-as-you-go and available when space allows.
