Project goals: To educate youth about environmental justice, pollution and related topics, using a now mow zone as a tool to make it fun ad keep the kids engaged. And to also benefit the Argentine neighborhood.
Progress: me and other community memebers dig up an area near the church where our office is in Argentine, it took a long time and we got rid of this giant old pole that was in there, we put up a plaque and fence and got it ready for the flowers. Then we had all the kids help us plant native flowers and now we meet every Wednesday to talk about different subjects related to the No mow zone and environmental justice. We are about halfway through the project, so far we have talked about air pollution and flooding. The kids seems to already have an understanding of pollution and flooding but it has been interesting to see where they think air pollution comes from and how their view trains and how they view their own neighborhood.
Challenges: It has been a good challenge and learning exercise for me to figure out how I can communicate serious and complex issues in a fun and simple way so that these kids have the knowledge they need to advocate for their own environmental health in the future.
Successes: I think we have been successsfull in getting the children to think and that’s big for me, I just want them thinking outside of the box they normally think in. We see a better understanding of environmental justice in the kids each week and that is a huge success
