The Climate Dynamic Lab at the University of St Andrews – led by Mike Byrne – uses physical theory, numerical models, and observational data to understand the climate system. Recently we have been working to understand extreme temperatures and the water cycle over land, how clouds and water vapour couple to tropical circulation, the dynamics of the tropical rainbelt, and why continents and oceans respond differently to climate change. For more information see our Publications, Google Scholar profile, Mike's St Andrews webpage, or drop us an email.
We are grateful for research funding from UKRI, NERC, Leverhulme Trust, Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland, and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme.
PhD available through Iapetus DTP: Atmospheric circulation over land in a changing climate. Deadline for international students to contact Mike = 7th Dec 2026; application deadline = 5th Jan 2027.
