General Information

An interactive workshop for students and anyone interested in learning more about baseball analytics. The morning session introduces basic data exploration techniques with the R programming language, a popular tool for data scientists and statisticians. The afternoon session will explore Statcast data which provides detailed pitch-by-pitch data including off-the-bat measures such as launch angle, exit velocity, and spray angle. All participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptop computer to the workshop.

Professor Jim Albert, Bowling Green State University and Professor Chad Redmond, Mercyhurst University will be presenting. Both instructors are experienced in teaching data science programming using baseball data.

The workshop concludes by attending the Indians-Mariners that afternoon at Progressive Field. A block of tickets will be purchased for people attending the workshop.

Schedule (Science Research Building SR 151)

10 am – 12 pm: An introduction to R, RStudio, with an emphasis on data manipulation and visualization using the popular Lahman package.

12 pm – 1 pm: Lunch on the Cleveland State Campus

1 pm – 3 pm: An advanced exploration of the Statcast data containing data on each of the 721,000 pitches from the 2018 season.

3 pm: Recess to go to the Indians-Mariners game.

All participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptop computer to the workshop.

Parking

A campus map is available here. Park in the Prospect Garage where you enter from Prospect Avenue near E. 22nd Street. Grab a ticket and we will give you a parking pass at the event. The event is across Euclid Avenue in the Science Research Building. Cross Euclid Avenue and go into the Science Research Building. Go up the staircase on the right and then the room will be on the left on the first floor.

Registration is space limited to 50

Cost includes parking, attendance and participation at workshop, lunch, and a Indians baseball ticket. You must attend the workshop to receive the Indians ticket. No refunds will be available.

Now - March 17th: All statistics students at the high school or college level and SABR members. Cost $5

March 18th - March 31st: Open to AP Statistics teachers. Cost $10

April 1st until registration is full: Open to Cleveland Chapter ASA members . Cost $15
