FACT
In the US, six billion gallons of fuel are wasted annually from idling; about half of that is from personal vehicles.
That costs you, the idler, additional fuel costs; even idling for a few minutes everyday can add up over time.
Researchers estimate that 30 million tons of carbon dioxide is emitted by US idlers in small personal vehicles. Eliminating the unnecessary idling of personal vehicles is equivalent to the removal of 5 million vehicles off our roadways.
Small, personal actions, add up!
FACT
On cold days, modern cars warm up faster & heat the interior of the car better when the car is at work, or driving, not in idle.
The batteries and starters are also much improved from older models & do not wear out by numerous engine starts & stops.
FACT
There's not much you can do when you are stuck idling in traffic. However, if the carpool lanes at school are long, the drive through is especially busy or you are waiting for a dance rehearsal or soccer practice to finish up, turn off that engine! This is especially important in places where there are children & outdoor physical activity taking place.
Idling is harder on the engine than restarting. Frequent restarting causes only about $10 worth of wear-and-tear per year, whereas idling leaves fuel residues that damage engine components and cause higher maintenance expenses over time.
If you expect to idle for more than 30 seconds, turn off the engine
DO NOT turn off your engine in traffic or at stoplights, as this could be dangerous
Steer clear of drive-though windows at fast-food restaurants, banks and drug stores. Park and go inside instead. If you must use a drive-through, turn off your engine while at the window.
Waiting for someone in the parking lot? Picking up the kids at school? #turnitofftogether
