Culture & Diversity

What is culture?

Culture is the specific norms, beliefs, languages, and values shown while people interact within a group.

Race vs. Ethnicity

Race: A category of people that share similar traits.

Ethnicity: Large groups of people placed in a group because of their cultural background.

Social Norms:

The "unwritten" rules that are considered acceptable in society.

Examples of Social Norms in America:

Girls must like pink and boys must like blue.

Leave at least a 15% tip for the waiter/waitress.

Boys don't cry.

Social norms are not always bad or useless. Each culture has their own separate set of social norms that vary.

Gender Roles:

What society thinks is appropriate for both men and women. Generally very opposing roles. Gender roles can also be considered gender stereotyping.

Recently Harry Styles, a popular singer/song writer, was featured on the cover of Vogue. In the magazine he was wearing a dress to break the stereotype that men need to be masculine.

Sarah Fuller is also breaking gender roles. She is a soccer and now football player. Recently Fuller was the first women to play power 5 football.

What is Socioeconomic Status?

The social standing of a person or group.

Can be determined by income/wealth, education and opportunities, and neighborhood. The higher the socioeconomic class the higher the income and opportunities.

The socioeconomic class a child is born into can affect them for the rest of their life.

Equality or Equity?

Equality on the right is when everyone is treated the exact same. Equity on the left is when everyone is treated based on their different circumstances.

After learning a little bit more about both equity and equality, which do you think is more important in the classroom?
